Day 27 – 5th Friday of Lent, March 31 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 27 – 5th Friday of Lent, March 31
Today we read a little more of St. Thérèse’s poem.  She reflects on Jesus in the Eucharist coming to our hearts and how that can help us give a gift back to Him.  She says this gift is a gift of souls she has been praying for.  Yet, she just focuses on today and does not worry about what is to come.  And who is better at helping us in this than our sweet Mother Mary?!  Let us seek to place our trust in God – just for today!  And remember any Lenten sacrifices we may offer - just focus on doing them, just for today!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for giving us the gift of yourself to us in Holy Communion.  You became so small that You might join yourself to us.  Help us to trust you more today!

St. Thérèse teaches us through her poem ‘My Song for Today’ cont’d (stanzas 8-11):
“Living Bread, Bread of Heaven, divine Eucharist,
O sacred Mystery! that Love has brought forth …
Come live in my heart, Jesus, my white Host,
Just for today.

Deign to unite me to you, Holy and sacred Vine,
And my weak branch will give you its fruit,
And I’ll be able to offer you a cluster of golden grapes
Lord, from today on.

I’ve just this fleeting day to form
This cluster of love, whose seeds are souls.
Ah! Give me, jesus, the fire of an Apostle
Just for today,

Immaculate Virgin! You are my Sweet Star
Giving Jesus to me and uniting me to Him.
O Mother! Let me rest under your veil
Just for today.” –  The Poetry of St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Lord Jesus, please help us to pray for others.  Help us to remember to seek the help of your dear Mother every day.  Help us to be strong in our faith and cultivate a bunch of beautiful grapes of souls for you!

Our Father …
Hail Mary …
Glory Be …

Merciful Father, in the name of Your sweet Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin and of the Saints, I pray that I be fired with Your spirit of love, and that You will grant me the grace to make You greatly loved.  (The daily prayer that St. Thérèse taught us to say, adapted for our little lives.)

St. Thérèse, pray for us!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Help someone in a way they wouldn’t expect today!  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 26 – Thursday, March 30 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 26 – Thursday, March 30
Over these next few days we will reflect on the joy of one of St. Thérèse’ poems.  Her heart overflows with love of Jesus and the joy it brings outweighs all hardships.  She reflects on how little she is compared to the eternity of God – her life is like just a day.  We, too, can learn to give ourselves over to love of Jesus and we will feel the joy it brings!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for loving us and giving yourself up for us.  Even while we are sinners, you gave everything for us so that we could one day live with you.  Thank you!

St. Thérèse teaches us through her poem ‘My Song for Today’:
“My life is but an instant, a passing hour.
My life is but a day that escapes and flies away.
O my God! You know that to love you on earth
I only have today!

Oh, I love you, Jesus!  My soul yearns for you.
For just one day remain my sweet support.
Come reign in my heart, give me your smile
Just for today!” –  The Poetry of St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Lord Jesus, please help us to recognize your great love for us.  Help us to understand our littleness but rejoice in your greatness!  Help us to be grateful for all you’ve given us.  Help us be joyful with the life we have.  Help us to share that joy with everyone!  We love you, Jesus!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Smile more today!  And the harder it is, the more brilliant your flower is!  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 25 – Wednesday, March 29 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 25 – Wednesday, March 29
Holiness is seek after God every day and allowing Him to consume us.  It is not perfection; we all make mistakes.  Yet, St. Thérèse tells us that God’s Love can take over our hearts only when we let go of ourselves.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for loving us even when we are imperfect and don’t live up to what you expect or what we promise.  Help us to let go of ourselves so your grace can consume us.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“Love consumes us only in the measure of our self-surrender.”

Lord Jesus, please help us to not be prideful.  Help us to not hold onto selfishness and getting our own way.  Help us let go of our desires so we may see yours.  Help open our hearts and our eyes to your great Love.  Consume us with the fire of your love, sweet Jesus.  We love you!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Let someone else have their way when you would rather have done it your own way.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 24 – Tuesday, March 28 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 24 – Tuesday, March 28
It only takes the faith of a mustard seed to move a mountain.  That doesn’t seem like much!  St. Thérèse tells us today this is exactly the little faith that her little way to holiness nurtures.  So let us keep pressing onward, for just being little – as a child – is all we need to be!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for helping us stay as little children before your throne.  You are good and wonderful and always provide for us.  Teach us how to help our faith grow.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“He whose Heart ever watches, taught me, that while for a soul whose faith equals but a tiny grain of mustard seed, He works miracles, in order that this faith which is so weak may be fortified; yet for His intimate friends, for His Mother, He did not work miracles until He had put their faith to test. Did He not let Lazarus die though Martha and Mary had sent to tell Him that he was sick? At the marriage at Cana, the Blessed Virgin having asked Him to come to the assistance of the master of the house, did He not reply that His hour was not yet come? But after the trial, what a recompense! Water changed to wine, Lazarus restored to life...” – Story of A Soul, Chapter VI

Lord Jesus, please help us to not be disheartened that we are little.  Being little can feel like nothing, but this little nothing pulls on your heartstrings more than so many grandeurs!  Help us to love our friends and our family a little more today. We love you, Jesus.

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:   Call another relative or friend to say hello, maybe someone who especially would love some cheering up!  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 23 – Monday, March 27 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 23 – Monday, March 27
Sometimes it is hard to pray.  Sometimes we don’t feel anything when we pray and it can make us kind of sad.  We call that a prayer time that is “dry.”  But this is a normal cycle of prayer life.  And St. Thérèse said she had times like this too!  She said even during these dry times she still would try to do little things to show her love for Jesus.  She may not have felt like praying long prayers or big acts of love or sacrifice, but she said she could still do little things that day and we can too!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, our dear Father, for loving us so much!  Thank you for being near us even when we don’t feel it.  You are always faithful and we glorify your name.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“In times of aridity (dryness) when I am incapable of praying, of practicing virtue, I seek little opportunities, mere trifles, to give pleasure to Jesus; for instance a smile, a pleasant word when inclined to be silent and to show weariness. If I find no opportunities, I at least tell Him again and again that I love Him; that is not difficult and it keeps alive the fire in my heart. Even though this fire of love might seem extinct I would still throw little straws upon the embers and I am certain it would rekindle.” – XVI letter to her sister Celine

Lord Jesus, please help us to continue to make itty bitty acts of love even when we don’t feel like it.  Please comfort us to know that this is okay and that you love us even if we can’t say all our prayers with a happy heart today.  You love us anyway!  Help us to love you more and more.

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Be extra loving to your family today and hold back negative words.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 22 – Saturday, March 25 & weekend message 4th Sunday of Lent - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 22 – Saturday, March 25 & 4th Sunday of Lent
This Sunday we will hear about the story of Jesus healing the blind man.  He said “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”  St. Thérèse reminds us that if we but ask the Lord with a heart of faith, He will hear us and surprise with his love.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, my God, for being our Good Shepherd.  Indeed, you, Lord are my shepherd; there is nothing we shall want.  You care for our every need.  Help us to always remember that You will do wonders in our life!

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“Even now I know it: yes, all my hopes will be fulfilled... yes... the Lord will work wonders for me which will surpass infinitely my immeasurable desires.” – VII Letter to Mother Agnes of Jesus

Lord Jesus, please help us to believe in your amazing works.  Help us to persevere in faith.  Help us to trust you more and love you more every day.  We love you, Jesus!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:   Do your chores without complaining at all today. (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 21 – 4th Friday of Lent, March 24 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 21 – 4th Friday of Lent, March 24
We continue to think about love today.  We are past the halfway point in our Lenten journey and it can seem long and difficult.  We may want to give up.  We may think – who cares about earning little flowers anymore any way!  Yet, we are working on our little flowers in order to love Jesus more.  He is the only one who understands our hearts.  Do we ever feel frustrated like no one understands us??  Well, Jesus does!  St. Thérèse tells us He is the only one truly capable of receiving our love!  Let us persevere in our love and sacrifices for the One who loves us eternally!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for understanding us and loving us through our challenges.  Please help us to not waste our love and affections on things, but always direct our love to You.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“But on whom shall our poor heart lavish its love? Who shall be found that is great enough to be the recipient of its treasures? Will a human being know how to comprehend them, and above all will he be able to repay? There exists but one Being capable of comprehending love; it is Jesus; He alone can give us back infinitely more than we shall ever give to him.” – Letter to her cousin, Marie Guerin

Lord Jesus, please help us to persevere in our Lenten journey.  Help us to love you more each day.  We love you, Jesus!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Help someone else out today.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 20 – Thursday, March 23 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 20 – Thursday, March 23
St. Thérèse tells us today about the blessings of following this way of love.  We may falter.  We may not always do what we promised to do.  We may sin and need to seek forgiveness.  And yet, God’s love still envelopes us and surrounds and when we have pursued His Love, God will consume all the unpleasant within us and leave us with peaceful hearts.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Thank you, dear Jesus, for loving us so much!  Thank you for loving us even when we are imperfect and don’t live up to what you expect or what we promise.  Your grace and forgiving love are ever flowing towards us to heal us and bring us closer to you.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“How sweet is the way of Love! True, one may fall, one may not be always faithful, but Love, knowing how to draw profit from all, very quickly consumes whatsoever may displease Jesus, leaving naught but humble and profound peace in the innermost soul.” –  Story of A Soul, Chapter VIII

Lord Jesus, please help us to not be isolated in ourselves when we feel we have failed.  Please help us to continue to seek you knowing that your Love is ready to scoop us up and cleanse our hearts again.  We love you, Jesus!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Ask Jesus for forgiveness for anything that you feel you’ve done wrong or haven’t done that you should have.  He’s so ready to forgive and embrace you in love!  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 19 – Wednesday, March 22 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 19 – Wednesday, March 22
Today we think about suffering.  No one likes to think about suffering, because it’s not fun.  Yet, we all suffer in some way.  Maybe you are sick or maybe someone is mean to you at school?  Maybe you get a bad grade or fall at recess?  Maybe you feel lonely or sad?  Maybe you lost something or worse someone close to you?  Maybe you stood up for your faith and got laughed at?  All of these are ways we suffer.  St. Thérèse reminds us that the question to ask is ‘do we suffer well?’ What does that mean?  When something bad happens, do we give it to Jesus, pray, and try our best to suffer with joy as a sacrifice of love for Jesus?  We all suffer in some way, but we can turn this sadness into a beautiful gift of love by giving it over to Jesus with a hopeful heart!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Oh heavenly Father, thank you for always providing for us.  Please help us to remember to think of you when we suffer.  Help us to turn our suffering into a gift of love to you.  Help us to suffer well!

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“It’s true, I suffer a great deal – but do I suffer well? That is the question. ” – Last Conversations

Lord Jesus, on Holy Thursday you prayed in the garden for the cup of suffering to pass by you, but then you said to our heavenly Father “not my will but yours be done.”  You then took the scourging, the crown of thorns, the carrying of the cross and being crucified, all because you love us!  You died for our salvation even while we were still sinners.  You took suffering and death and turned it into a force for good!  Please teach us to do the same by clinging to you and your mother, Mary!

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Instead of getting angry or frustrated over some suffering, pray to Jesus and ask His help to turn this sacrifice into an act of love.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 18 – Tueday, March 21 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 18 – Tuesday, March 21
First, a personal note: HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY, EMMANUEL!!!!!

Today we think about how our hearts and prayer can grow as we get older.  When we are little, are prayers are simple but as we begin to grow (with every birthday!) we can understand more of what our parents teach us, act rightly and have our own personal prayer time.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Oh heavenly Father, thank you for always providing for us.  Please help us to grow in love and virtue.  Thank you for the great gift of our family and especially our loving parents!  You have given us our parents to guide us and teach us how to walk in your ways.  Please help me listen to my parents more closely.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“As I grew older I loved the good God more and more, and very frequently did I offer Him my heart, using the words my mother had taught me. I strove in all my actions to please Jesus and was most watchful never to offend Him.” – Story of A Soul, Chapter II.

Lord Jesus, you loved your holy mother Mary and foster father St. Joseph.  You obeyed them as you grew and listened to their council.  Please help me to listen to my parents and use their wisdom to choose to do the right things.  Help me remember to pray every day.

Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Spend 5 extra minutes in prayer today. If you are 8 or older, spend 10 extra minutes in prayer!  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 17 – Monday, March 20 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 17 – Monday, March 20
Today we continue to focus on how we can love Jesus more and make Him loved in our world.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Jesus, thank you for your love for us.  Please help us to continually learn to love you more.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“Seeing the eternal recompense so disproportionate to the trifling sacrifices of this life, I longed to love Jesus, to love Him ardently, to give him a thousand proofs of tenderness while yet I could do so...” – Story of A Soul, Chapter V

Lord Jesus, please help us be strong today and learn to see others as you see them.  Help us to remember all our parents have taught us and remember all of the good things you do for us.

Amen.

Day 16 – Saturday, March 18 & weekend message, 3rd Sunday of Lent! - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

We've been praying for you all!  What great gardens of little flowers we are building!  Can you believe the 3rd Sunday of Lent is here already?  How has your journey been going?  If you send us a photo of your gardens or a story about how it is going, we will be happy to include it on a future post! :-)  The boys would love to see it!
If you don't have my email, you can message us through Facebook - link to the right.

Day 16 – Saturday, March 18 & weekend message, 3rd Sunday of Lent!

At Mass this weekend, we will hear about the Israelites grumbling in the desert.  Even though they had been slaves, they questioned why they left Egypt.  They forgot God's acts of love for them!  Moses asked God to help him so the people would calm down and God told Moses “Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.”  God always takes care of us!  (Even when we've been grumbling!)  In the Gospel, Jesus is sitting at a well at noon, and a woman approaches the well to gather her water.  Jesus sees her and it is an encounter of love.  He reveals that he knows all about her life and says that He has a special water to give her.  He says, “Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."”  How wonderful is our God!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Lord Jesus, thank you for always taking care of us.  Please help us to remember the good things you have done for us.  Help us to remember your faithfulness especially when we are worried about things that might happen in our future.  Thank you for your living water and for your gift of yourself in Holy Communion at Mass.  Lord, we believe; help our unbelief!

St. Thérèse teaches us a daily prayer to say:
“This little prayer which includes all my desires I ask you to say for me each day:
“Merciful Father, in the name of Your sweet Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin and of the Saints, I pray to You that my sister be fired with Your spirit of love, and that You will grant her the grace to make You greatly loved.”
If God should take me soon to Himself, I ask you to continue each day this same prayer, for in Heaven my desire will be the same as upon earth; to love Jesus and to make Him loved.” – III Letter to her Missionary "Brothers"

Lord Jesus, when we hear your voice, help us to not harden our hearts but to listen openly and do your will with much delight!  Let us remember to come to You to find our fulfilment – You are the only One who can meet all our needs and quench the thirstiness of our hearts!

Our Father …
Hail Mary …
Glory Be …

Merciful Father, in the name of Your sweet Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin and of the Saints, I pray that I be fired with Your spirit of love, and that You will grant me the grace to make You greatly loved.*

St. Thérèse, pray for us!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Draw a picture of Jesus speaking to the woman at the well.  Give the picture to your mom or dad to hang up and talk about the Gospel story.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 15 – 3rd Friday of Lent, March 17 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 15 – 3rd Friday of Lent, March 17
On this third Friday of Lent we offer a little more to Jesus.  Sometimes we can feel far from God.  Sometimes it is hard to know why God has us in a certain place.  Maybe someone we love has been moved away from us or maybe we have moved away from friends.  It is okay to share these feelings with Jesus and ask Him to help us know He is near and to understand His will.  Today we will read a poem by St. Thérèse when she had similar feelings when her friend and spiritual director was in Canada.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Lord Jesus, thank you for your love. Please help us to know you are near to us even when we do not feel your closeness.  Please help us to know that you have a plan for all of our dear friends and family, too.

St. Thérèse teaches us through a poem she wrote:
Prayer of an Exiled Child
“Near you, my God, I remember a Father,
The beloved apostle of your Sacred Heart.
But he is exiled on a foreign shore…
It’s time; bring back my Pastor at last!
Give your children back their guide and their light.
Call your apostle home to France, Lord.” –  September 11, 1894

[Her spiritual director responded to her poem, “Thank you for your feastday wishes, your delightful poetry.  Everything coming from the little lamb does my heart good.”]

Lord Jesus, thank you for your great love. Thank you for always helping us to persevere in our acts of love and sacrifice, Jesus!  Help us to show our love to our friends even if they cannot be near us and to trust Your will in all.

Our Father …
Hail Mary …
Glory Be …

St. Thérèse, pray for us!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Let someone else go first when it should have been your turn.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)

Day 14 – Thursday, March 16 - Following St. Thérèse’ Little Way through Lent

Day 14 – Thursday, March 16
As we earn our little flowers every day we must remember why we are calling these little acts of love and sacrifice flowers.  St. Thérèse said she did not have great deeds to give to Jesus, so she – like a child – will give flowers to Jesus! So she explains that she does not want to miss even one flower!  So every little look, every word, every little action – she wants to do them all for love of Jesus.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus, we love giving you flowers!  Help us to see all the opportunities – all the flowers – just waiting to be picked by us and given to you.

St. Thérèse teaches us:
“How shall I show my love is proved by deeds? Well - the little child will strew flowers...she will embalm the Divine Throne with their fragrance, will sing with silvery voice the canticle of love.
Yes, my Beloved, it is thus that my life's brief day shall be spent before You. No other means have I of proving my love than to strew flowers; that is, to let no little sacrifice escape me, not a look, not a word, to avail of the very least actions and do them for Love. I wish to suffer for Love's sake and for Love's sake even to rejoice; thus shall I strew flowers. Not one shall I find without shedding its petals for You...and then I will sing, I will always sing, even if I must gather my roses in the very midst of thorns - and the longer and sharper the thorns the sweeter shall be my song.” – Story of A Soul, Chapter XI

Lord Jesus, thank you for loving us!  We just love giving you flowers, Jesus!  Thank you for showing us all the ways to love the people around us!

Our Father …
Hail Mary …
Glory Be …

St. Thérèse, pray for us!
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Today’s Little Flower activity:  Do a chore for someone else today.  (Color in a flower for Jesus when your mom or dad has seen that it is completed!)
